MICRO-CONTROLLERs
The heart of any robotics system is some kind of computer or controller. Therefore, we are presently evaluating serveral possible devices. For easy of operation but limited programming; the Parallax STAMP type micro-controller has been the easiest to work will. This controller works very well in a serial interface mode and there are many devices that will support this serial mode of operation. Most board type processors have a limited serial interface and requires somewhat complex programming. This does allow for interrupts which the STAMP does not. For simple evaluation and prototyping the STAMP is the easiest way to go.
Some board type micro-processor controller are being evaluated and investigated at the present time for use in these types of systems. These boards allow for more complex programming and allow for interrupt driven interfaces. Two DOS type Board are being evaluation. The HANDY board from MIT is being evaluation and a POWER PC board is under investigation.
We are investigating the AMD Athlon Processor and the latest POWER PC's among with some newer type devices. We are investigating the implementation of Artificial Intelligent and Neural Network. We have several programs in these areas. Work will continue in these areas which are determined to be useful in the meeting of our final objectives.
The most difficult problems appears to the proper cabling. During development this is always a big problems. After the prototypes have been build and tested, proper cabling can be constructed and implement. During the initial testing and prototyping development, cabling must be done on the fly. This can lead to many problems.
